BMW 2000 Touring (1966-1972)

The new class of BMW saloons had arrived in 1961 but the ultimate evolution came in 1966 with the introduction of the 2000 and especially the Touring international injected (Tii) with a bored out four cylinder topping 130 bhp. Intended as an upscale version of the 1800, the BMW 2000 Touring featured distinct wide taillights, more exterior trim, and unique rectangular headlights giving the saloon with much more presence on the road. The press at the time called it “the best performing 2-liter saloon in today’s market and the best handling and best ride as well.” Fine words indeed and it was this type of engineering that gave BMW their reputation that stays with them today.

As part of the classic BMW scene the 2000 today has cult status among enthusiasts with values over £25,000 for a nice one. BMW had started designing sporting saloons which became their forte through the seventy’s and eighty’s although emerged in the sixty’s with the new class of BMW’s being introduced striking a chord in West Germany’s middle class. Disc brakes and independent suspension ensured the car would handle and stop as well as it drove. Rare today the BMW 2000 is an icon of its time with the Tii being a bit special.

A BUYERS GUIDE

These rare Beemers are excellently designed and engineered, making them a sheer delight to drive the only problem you could find is that many were restored cheaply in the mid eighties through to the mid nineties so beware when searching and check how long ago it was restored.

Exterior

Rust proves a problem for many BMW 2000 models and hot spots are everywhere including rear spring boxes on the inner wheel arch housing, outer arches into the rear sill area, inner and outer sills, front inner wings, lower outer and inner front panels, front floor, boot floor and inner front wing box sections.

Under the bonnet

The M10 engines are strong providing they are well maintained; a small amount of oil burning is nothing to worry about but any signs of blue smoke may indicate worn valve stem seals or even worn cylinder bores. Both manual and automatic gear boxes are strong and are likely to outlast the engine subject to good service history although synchromesh on manuals will wear causing crunching in second gear, look out for this.

A floppy gear lever is common but easily rectified with new bushes. For ease of servicing and reliability the carburettor version is the one to go for as the Tii has a complex Kugelfischer injection system which requires specialist servicing unless you are looking at a pristine Tii and don’t mind the additional complexities.

INTERESTING FACT

In 1972 BMW developed its first electric car based on the 1602 model. It was called the BMW Elektro-Antrieb and unveiled at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, West Germany way before many other car manufacturers.
