It’s been 30 years since Ford introduced its homologation special. Virtually unbeatable in Touring car racing Ford’s pinnacle fast road car was every young man’s dream. With real track pedigree the Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 has given any car enthusiast aspirations of owning one someday.
The Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 hit the competitive race circuit as the ultimate group A machine. It quickly rose to fame by taking 40 outright wins in succession. External changes to the original Sierra Cosworth were subtle. Additional cooling vents, a front splitter and alterations to the huge rear-tail to keep the car on the tarmac were added. Under the bonnet changes included a Garret T31 turbo, larger intercooler and induction system creating 224bhp.
Today the RS500 is recognisable as Fords ultimate 80’s champion and with values continuing to rise, the rest of the world agree.
The Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 was built in limited numbers with just 500 made in total. This makes them rare today and expensive to buy. They were produced in just three colours from new being black, white and moonstone blue. At one stage white was the most expensive to buy as a used car with the moonstone blue being less desirable. Today the colour doesn’t really factor in the price.
When viewing an RS500 the first thing to check is the body work with sills and floors being typical rot spots. Also check where the inner wings meet the bulk head another area prone to rust. Engines are strong but modifications can be a minefield. Make sure the car has documented history including any changes to the standard spec. Parts are now becoming hard to source. Ford themselves have no front bumpers, splitters or rear upper spoilers, no turbos, or engine blocks and no interiors or dashes. Make sure your RS500 has all the above or start searching.
Interiors are now dated with plastic everywhere so watch out for cracks. Seats will be worn and replacement upholstery is hard to find so check inside thoroughly. Fortunately the RS500 doesn’t suffer with many problems so buy on condition and history.
Tickford were responsible for building the RS500 at a rate of 15 cars per day, all 500 being made and sold at £19,950 each.
